Hoje o mundo acordou sobressaltado com o anúncio de uma reunião de gabinete de emergência no Palácio de Buckingham. Entre as especulações que se seguiram sobre mortes, abdicações, anúncios de casamento, eu confesso que esperava que a qualquer momento alguém se lembrasse de especular que afinal a Princesa Diana estava viva, tal foi a loucura que se seguiu...O Palácio de Buckingham acabaria então por divulgar um comunicado dando conta da razão por detrás da reunião.
Today the world woke up startled with the announcement of an emergency cabinet meeting at Buckingham Palace. Among the speculations that followed about deaths, abdications, marriage announcements, I confess that I was expecting that at any moment someone would remember to speculate that after all Princess Diana was alive, such was the folly that followed... O Príncipe Philip, Duque de Edimburgo que completa no próximo mês 96 anos de idade, decidiu afastar-se, a partir do próximo Outono, da vida pública. Príncipe Consorte desde 1952, Philip contou com o apoio da Rainha na tomada desta decisão. A sua agenda não será alterada até Agosto, o que subentende que Philip está de boa saúde, e o comunicado deixa também expresso que o Príncipe poderá participar em alguns actos oficiais pontualmente. 
Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh who turns 96-year-old next month, decided that he will no longer carry out public engagements from the autumn this year. Este comunicado, embora envolto em rebuliço, não representa uma surpresa. Philip tem sido um pilar verdadeiramente importante para a Rainha e um exemplo de serviço, dedicação, lealdade e dinamismo para todos. O Duque de Edimburgo é Presidente de mais de 780 organizações às quais continuará associado e o seu empenho para com estas associações é inegável e verdadeiramente admirável. Desde 1952, Philip conduziu 22.191 compromissos a solo. Alguns números impressionantes e que mostram bem o dinamismo de que há pouco falei. É uma reforma mais que merecida!
This statement, while enveloped in such fuss, does not come as a surprise. Philip has been a truly important pillar for the Queen and an example of service, dedication, loyalty and dynamism for all. The Duke of Edinburgh is President of more than 780 organizations to which he will continue to be associated and his commitment to these associations is undeniable and truly admirable. Não representando uma surpresa, e penso que falo por todos os royal watchers, também sinto que uma Era está a chegar ao fim,. É o rumo natural das coisas é certo, mas é raro ver pessoas da fibra de Elizabeth II e Philip nos dias de hoje, e sei que vamos sentir muito a falta deles quando o seu trabalho chegar aom fim. São dois símbolos nacionais que enchem de orgulho não somente os britânicos como também todos aqueles que partilham um pouco dos seus valores.
Not representing a surprise, and I think I speak for all the royal watchers, I also feel that an Era is coming to an end. It is the natural course of things, but it is rare to see people with the fiber of Elizabeth II and Philip these days, and I know that we will miss them when their work comes to an end. As homenagens após este anúncio oficial não se fizeram tardar e a (ainda) Primeira-Ministra Theresa May emitiu um comunicado a agradecer, em nome de todo o país, o trabalho e serviço prestados pelo Duque de Edimburgo ao Reino Unido.
The tributes after this official announcement were fast and the (still) Prime Minister Theresa May issued a statement thanking, on behalf of the whole country, the work and service provided by the Duke of Edinburgh to the United Kingdom.
