Esplendor Real #41 / Royal Splendor #41

Following the State Visit of the President of Singapore to the United Kingdom, Queen Elizabeth II hosted a State Banquet. In the absence of the Duchess of Cornwall and the Royal Princess, Sophie, Countess of Wessex took over the role of 2nd most ranked royal lady at the head table, taking the place of honor next to the presidential guest.

On this occasion, the Countess of Wessex returned to wear a tiara that for many it is still a mystery, but that is part of the Queen's Private Collection.

"Canadian Aquamarine Tiara / Five Aquamarine Tiara"

Little is known about this tiara adorned with five large aquamarine. There are two theories on the table. The first is based on the fact that this tiara was made from a set of aquamarines ornaments, offer from the Governor of São Paulo (Brazil) to Queen Elisabeth II in 1968. Queen Elisabeth II has a parure of aquamarines which was ordered from that batch of offerings, of which the resulting most impressive piece is the Brazilian Aquamarine Tiara, completed in 1973.

According to the book "The Queen's Jewels" this tiara was adapted to take four extra scroll motifs from another aquamarines and diamonds jewel  the Queen would have received from the Brazilian present. Apparently this jewel was described as "a V-shaped hair ornament ".

The second theory assumes that the tiara was given to the Queen during ther trip to Canada in 1970. It was from that trip the only record of Elisabeth II wearing this piece, which led many people to believe that this piece would have been dismantled to give origin to the Brazilian Aquamarine Tiara, which was completed in 1973.

This version has been weakened when in 2010, the Countess of Wessex wore this tiara at the pre-wedding dinner of Prince Guillaume of Luxembourg with the Countess Stephanie de Lannoy.

At this point, many still assumed that this diadem with five aquamarines would be a convertible piece from the Brazilian Aquamarine Tiara, but looking in detail the size of the stones and ornamental motifs, we see they are quite different. Which leads us to conclude that this smallest piece remained on the royal vaults without being used until 2010.

After 2010, Sophie wore this tiara twice for sure. At the wedding of Princess Madeleine of Sweden and Christopher O'Neill in 2013 and recently at the State Banquet held in honor of the President of Singapore on 21st October 2014.

There are even rumors of a third appearance in a State Banquet held in honor of the Indonesian President in October 2012, but there are no clear pictures to prove it.

It seems therefore that the tiara was never dismantled. Remains doubtful whether its origin is from the set of gifts offered by the Brazilian government or whether it was an offer from the Canadian government.

What seems certain is that Sophie seem to like this piece, having been her choice for most of the major tiara events that she attended since 2010.
