Esplendor Real #40 / Royal Splendor #40

Today, following the line with which we started the week, I bring you a piece of the Empire of Japan.
Despite Japan being the oldest monarchy in the world, with a long and rich history, the same history does not include many headpices, especially tiaras. It's not exactly a diadem they wear to match the traditional court robe (kimono). It was only in the nineteenth century with the coming of the Meiji Era that these pieces debuted in the imperial family jewelry box.

Diadema do Crisântemo Imperial/  Imperial Chrysanthemum Tiara

This delicate tiara is perhaps the most special and symbolic of the imperial collection. Made entirely of diamonds, this diadem represents seven double-petaled chrysanthemums separated by floral motifs. A very special symbolism as the chrysanthemum is the symbol of the Imperial Seal. Although there is no certainty it seems this tiara may have originated in the Meiji Era (1868-1912) when the Westernization arriving in Japan.

Given its symbolism, this diadem is exclusively used by the Empress. Currently is in possession of the Empress Michiko. Before her, the diadem was worn by Empress Nagako (1903-2000), mother of the current Emperor Akihito.

M.B. from the fantastic Royal Jewels Fan Club page on facebook still thinks this tiara may have been used by Empress Sadako (1884-1951) as devant-de-corsage.

The Imperial Chrysanthemum Tiara seems to usually be the choice of the Empress Michiko to some of the most important occasions of the Japanese Imperial Court, as the New Year Reception.

White is a very important color for the imperial family and so all their tiaras are made exclusively with a diamonds or with few pearls, so they are the perfect combination to white dresses that are usually used in more formal situations by the ladies of the Imperial court.
